Jessica Bush & Family

I was born Baby Girl Jameson to Donna Jameson and Unknown Father. Although I was born and adopted in South Carolina, I was raised and have lived in New Jersey from the time I was a week old. My (adoptive) parents are Joseph, Jr. & Marie (Veninata) Bush. I graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey in 1999 with a BA in Social Science and all during my college years I searched for my birth mother. Donna and I were reunited in 1999 with the help of a private investigator and I’ve been researching all of my family trees on and off since that time. I connect to the Shetler family through my biological family as follows:
Donna is the daughter of Don & Jeannine (Whipple) Jameson.
Jeannine is the daughter of James & Mary (Burnbrier) Whipple.
James is the son of John & Daisy May (Shetler) Whipple.
Daisy is the daughter of Ellsworth D. (who frequently used his middle name as his first, which was either David or Daniel) & Mary S. (Brandt) Shetler.
Ellsworth is the son of David & Nancy (Butt/Butts) Shetler.
David Shetler is one of the children of John & Mary Elizabeth (Barnett) Shetler.
According to the information located here: http://www.schuttler.us/Schuttler%20History%20from%20Charles.pdf , John Shetler came to America from Switzerland when he was 12 years old. He was born in 1790. If anyone is interested, his headstone (and his wife’s headstone) can be viewed here:
John Shetler – http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=387491&GRid=9111225&
Mary Elizabeth Barnett – http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=97669562
One final note: Although my families did not know one another at the time of my adoption and were not permitted to share information, through reunion I discovered that both my maternal (biological) grandmother and my paternal (adoptive) grandmother share a similar heritage. They both originally hail from Ohio and are both of some German ancestry. In researching both trees, I have recently discovered that a 1st cousin 3x removed from me (in my adoptive family) married John Henry Schottler, Jr. (1890 – 1937) in OH. I have not yet traced this line to make any connection but I’m guessing there will be more news on this eventually! (PS – If anyone recognizes John Henry from one of their lines please let me know. His wife was Elizabeth “Bessie” (Hoctor) King.)
John Schottler Jr. married Elizabeth (Hoctor) King.
Elizabeth was a widow with 2 sons.
She was also the daughter of Michael Hoctor and Mary Degnan.
Mary Degnan was the sister of Ella (Degnan) Travers.
Ella married James Travers and they had Alice (Travers) Backenstoe Woge.
Alice first married George Backenstoe. Family lore says she divorced him but the census records I found say she was a widow.
Alice remarried William Woge, a widower with 1 son.
Alice & William had Mary & Janet Woge.
Janet Woge married Joesph Bush Sr. and they had my (adoptive) father, Joseph Bush Jr.
Welcome to the family, Jess.

Scott Shetler & Family

Mr. Scott Shetler shares the same Great-Great Grandfather that we do. Scott sent me an email saying that his Great-Great Grandfather and Grandmother was Christian and Fannie Nisley.  With a lot of help from Amanda Shetler, we were able to run them down and found that they were the parents of Daniel Schoettler who was the parent of John D. Shetler who was the father of our parents. So we share the same lineage.  Here is what Scott told us about himself:
There’s another book containing Fannie’s family history that is viewable online (http://books.google.com/books?id=Q_RUAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA360&lpg=PA360&dq=%22christian+shetler%22+1804&source=bl&ots=pMGUzq5MrP&sig=TUN8o4yi__evHPCBlrLoXfsc79I&hl=en&sa=X&ei=RRFmUZTJG7jF4APE04GQAg&ved=0CDAQ6AEwADgK#v=onepage&q=%22christian%20shetler%22%201804&f=false). It also lists Christian and Fannie’s children as Mary, John, Moses, Christian, Jacob, Lewis and Abraham.
My lineage goes:
Christian Shetler (b. 7-17-1804) & Fannie Nisley, Davidsville PA; Their son Moses Shetler (b. 2-16-1836) & wife Lydia Miller, Baltic OH;
Their son Levi Shetler (b. 6-23-1867) & wife Mattie Miller, Apple Creek OH; Their son Noah Shetler (b. 5-16-1904) & wife Lovina Coblentz, Conewango Valley NY; Their son Roy Shetler (b. 11-24-1926) & wife Ethel Snyder, Enon Valley PA; Their son Richard Shetler & wife Barbara Rose; & Their son Scott Shetler (me)

As far as I know, all of these folks were Amish up until my grandfather Roy, who was born Amish but left in the 1940s.

I purchased the book by Andy Shetler and have it in my possession. This book starts with Christian Shetler and Fannie Nisley and includes hundreds of their descendants. The book is difficult to locate and I got the only copy available on Amazon.

You can go here and do a zip code search to find libraries that have a copy (the closest appears to be in Indiana):

I have asked Scott for more information on siblings, etc. and will post it here when I receive it.  Scott can be reached via these three media:  Website: Quirky Travel Guy; Twitter: @quirkytravelguy; Facebook: Quirky Travel Guy

Eric & His Brother, William Schuttler Family

Eric Schuttler wrote and said “I received the link to your site from my brother Bill (William Schuttler – billy@schuttler.net) and wanted to see if we could compare notes and perhaps see if there’s a connection… my name’s Eric Schuttler, of the Schuttlers from Geneseo, IL —
– My dad, Larry, grew up there, –  as did my grandfather, Gordon, – and his father, William Frederick Schuttler; born in 1890.

– – Before that, my great-great-grandfather (William Frederick Schuttler Sr.) was born in 1858 in Milwaukee and moved to Geneseo, and his father (also named William), born in 1826 in Wiesbaden, Germany, is as far back as I can go with the Schuttlers… he was married to a Caroline Rieger, born 1830 in Hesen, Germany.

Any chance the lineage you have matches up with any of these characters? As far as I can tell, we haven’t had any surname variations, except one: we used to be named Schuettler (basically an umlaut-u, a long vowel sound) which got downgraded to a short u sound sometime after emigration, I think…

Hopefully we can share some data and get a better picture of what our trees look like.  Eric email:  j0ker@ctc.net

Take care,
Eric

Then he wrote and said:

Hi there, I located your site while researching my Amish ancestry and wanted to share my story in case there’s a chance we are related.

I descended from Christian Shetler/Schoettler, but as far as I can tell, he does not appear to be any of the Christian Shetlers mentioned on your website. This Christian Shetler was evidently born in Germany in 1804, married Fannie Nisley and most likely settled in Pennsylvania. They had six children: Mary, John, Moses, Christian, Jacob, Lewis, Abe. Do any of these folks sound familiar?

I have a genealogy book (http://www.amazon.com/Christian-Shetler-family-history-1804-1965/dp/B0007G27H6) documenting our family tree starting with Christian. There are so many Christian Shetlers that it’s hard to know who’s who.

I just returned from Berlin, Ohio, where I met with some of my distant Amish relatives who are featured in this book. I know there are Shetlers everywhere, so I assume we may be related, but I could not find any mention of any of the folks in this book on your site.

Lara Kizer Family

Hi Mike,

I stumbled across your webpage and found it wonderful!  I am a descendent of Christian Schoetler and Katharina Wehrey down through son Johanne  and then Christian and Fanny to son Jacob Shetler and his son Samuel Shetler and his son Sanford Shetler to my dad Stanwyn Shetler.  My grandfather, Sanford G. Shetler, wrote a book about his father, Samuel Shetler (aka S.G. Shetler) which is what got me started on our genealogy. Book is Preacher of the People. Both Samuel and Sanford for well-known Mennonite ministers in the Johnstown PA area and across the country. Both ran conscientious objector camps…Samuel in WWI and Sanford in WWII.

Your website will be a tremendous resource for my genealogy. If there is any info I can provide just let me know!!
